St. Arnaud Secondary College is situated halfway between Bendigo and Horsham and is 130km North of Ballarat. The College has a stable student population of approximately 250 students. Students are drawn from the township of St. Arnaud, and bused from the rural district from a radius of approximately 40 kilometres. The township is predominantly a service town to the rural community it supports. Its major industries are in metal fabrication, manufacture of agricultural equipment and processing agricultural products. The majority of students begin and complete their schooling within the town. The St. Arnaud Primary School is the major feeder school supplying 85% of a new intake of students each year. As a consequence the College is an integral part of the community and draws on the community to support the school. The community members are directly involved with School Council, Parents' Club and volunteer help with music, sport, drama productions, excursions, ground maintenance and learning programs such as the College Literacy Program.
St. Arnaud Secondary College is a member of the North Central Schools' Cluster, the purpose of which is to widen curriculum options for students through the use of the North Central Cluster Centre (N.C.C.C.), video-conferencing and shared resources. St. Arnaud Secondary College aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning through networking and cluster professional development, and organising interschool sport through the North Central Secondary School Sports Association.
In the context of a small rural community, the College aims to develop students who have the skills that will enable them to function independently in the St. Arnaud community or beyond. This will occur within an environment that encourages each student to reach their potential with appropriate attributes to be able to live, work and succeed in the information age of the 21st Century. The College motto is “Strive High, Then Higher”. Academically, the school provides students with the opportunity to pursue tertiary studies by offering a wide range of V.C.E. subjects. At Year 11 and 12, students have a wide range of choice of V.C.E. and VET units within the College but also have access to units in Technology and Agriculture at the N.C.C.C. and extra units via video-conferencing from other Colleges. St. Arnaud Secondary College continues to build greater partnerships with the community so that the curriculum can reflect the needs of students and the wider community.
